Yangtze's Megalopolis

Visual Exploration - Chongqing, December 2014.

With over 33 million people living in a 85.000 km2 area, Chongqing is the fastest growing city of the Chinese hinterland. Located on the banks of the Yangtze river, Chongqing has been chosen as the new Chinese’s engine of growth, earning the special status of municipality in 1997. In the last two decades the city turned into an extremely densely populated metropolis, attracting millions of citizens from the surrounding farmlands. The success of Chongqing is the result of a combination of factors: great investments in infrastructures, the copious amounts of Foreign Direct Investments attracted, the subsidies given to foreign businesses and the low corporate tax rates that allowed a rapid development and the creation of a multitude of experimental projects. This model allowed Chongqing to expand, allowing migrating farmers to receive residential land rights and social housings (reform of the Hukou system). Those farmer are now employed in the booming construction industry, often in poor conditions, in temporary dwellings located on the constructions sites and the whole city looks like a permanent building place.
